Idea 1:
Assumption- Americans feel antagonistic towards the Middle-East
Claim- America is becoming more racist towards Muslims
Reasons- Many incidents have taken place in the last week, including the burning of the Quran, the Islamist mosque, and the stabbing of a Muslim cab driver.
Idea 2:
Assumption- Drug use is a prevalent problem among young adults
Claim- Drug testing should be required among athletes
Reasons- Drugs can be an advantage in sports, lead to unhealthy addictions, and are against the honor code.
Idea 3:
Assumption- America's economic policy is ineffective
Claim- America needs to tell the international community China is not abiding by the laws of free market trade.
Reasons- China has superior economic power to that of the U.S., can use this power as dangerous leverage against the States, and increases America's national debt annually.

ReplyDeleteWe talked about your first idea in class, so I'm not going to comment on it now. However, feel free to ask me any additional questions you have. On your second idea, I would make sure that drug testing is not already required on campus (I think they are). Maybe the argument could be tweaked to say they should be more frequent. Also, you're going to need to prove there is a problem with drug use in the athletes now--whether by sharing stories of instances you know, or by talking to other athletes/coaches/etc. Though, I don't know how forthcoming some of those people will be if there are actual problems in this area.
Your third idea is still a little vague to me. What laws are you referring to? Are there specific international regulations that China has agreed to follow, but is now not doing so? I don't know about this, and I'm guessing you would need to inform your readers about the specific laws they are breaking as well. Keeping mind these must be laws/trade agreements China has agreed on, otherwise it's kind of a moot point.
