Elizabeth Lin 11am class MWF

1. 1. Claim: We don’t get enough money a day with our dining plus.

Reason: We get $11.10 every day and if we eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday that’s all of our money gone. But, Sundays meals cost more than $11.10, so people who eat all 3 meals every day of that week, don’t have enough money to eat on Sundays.

Assumption: If we receive more than $11.10 everyday, we’ll have enough money to eat on Sundays, instead of paying out of our pockets.

2. 2. Claim: Freshmen mentoring bundles/envelopes limit our choices of classes we want to take.

Reason: We’re required to take that GE class no matter what, why can’t we decide when we want to take it? If a student has a load of hard classes for one semester, but the student has to take Book of Mormon and American Heritage, the student wouldn’t be able to get out of it because that’s the envelope that was given to them.

Assumption: Freshmen Mentoring bundles are too much work to deal with, when we can do it on our own.

3. 3. Claim: Some Women and Men at BYU forget that they signed the Honor Code.

Reason: More women are wearing tight fit clothing, skirts and shorts above the knees. Unfortunately men are wearing shorts above the knee and deep cut V-necks that show too much of the chest.

Assumption: If students at BYU keep this up, the administration might possibly change our dress code to match BYU-Idaho’s dress code.

  1. Idea 2: Wouldn't it be grand to be guaranteed to find a full schedule without these bundles... I had a close friend last year before the bundles were required...not do the bundle he was left with virtually no general classes available during normal school hours. His classes usually began at 4 pm every single day. This was due to him not doing the bundle. With the bundle it guarantees every freshman to be in at least 3 required general education classes.

  2. Liz,

These are some good ideas, now I'm going to tell you potential problems/opposing viewpoints. Your first argument assumes that the point of Dining Plus is to provide you three full meals every day, not just a certain amount of money/credit to use as you choose. You would want to talk to the people in charge of the meal plans and clarify just what the purpose of the meal plan is. I think the first counterargument for this is OpEd would be for them to raise the price and then you could get more.

For your second argument, I would suggest talking to someone in the Freshman Mentoring program and find out what the purpose of the bundles is. Then, I would try to show how the current system ultimately fails in this goal or how the goal is not really helping your education. Becca brings up an interesting counterpoint and something you'll want to be aware of when writing this argument.

On your third paper, I would say to include several specific examples of times when you saw people dressed inappropriately. A cool thing to do might be to sit in the Wilk and keep count of how many people you see not following the dress code within a 2-hour span. Or something like that. I would also plan on doing a lot of pathetic appeals, building on the idea that coming to BYU is a choice and asking students what kind of image they think they are building for themselves when they dress immodestly.

  3. you should talk about in your idea 2 that the envelopes requires students who have tested out of those classes like american heritage to take it anyways...so it was a waste of AP classes and tests

  4. On your third argument, make sure that you have some sort of empirical data backing up your assumption that BYU may adopt the honor code held by BYU-I. That's a pretty strong assumption.
