idea 1.
claim: BYU should sponsor the rugby teams
reasons: both men and womens team go to nationals every year...bring in a lot of revenue; growing sport....more people are attending games
assumption: rugby would help bring money in for the school....but would be better if sponsored

idea 2.
claim: scooter and skateboards should be allowed on campus.
reason: faster transportation for students to and from class; easier to store and carry than bike
assumption: if students get to class faster they will do better in school

idea 3.
claim: the canon center hours should be longer on sundays
reason: some ward get out super late and have hardly any time to get food on sundays due to early closing hours; student who dont eat healthily and regularly dont do well in school
assumption: students with bad eating habits dont do well in school

  1. Idea 3: Keep in mind of the workers who would be working to keep the Cannon open for that long. It would require more kids to miss church or to not have much of a "Holy Sabbath", if they were required to work on Sundays.

  2. Vasha,

Great ideas. I'm going to play the devil's advocate here and give you some counterpoints, plus ideas on ways to make those arguments.

Your first argument has some real potential, especially since you are a rugby player and can more easily talk to the coaches and players (which you will want to do for sure). Find out what other colleges/universities in the area have a school-sponsored rugby team and bring this up in your paper if other schools do. Also, try to get an exact count, or an estimate, of the average attendance at rugby games (get this from your coach or another reliable source). You will want to find out what the requirements are for a club to become an official school sport and make sure that you aren't ignoring these requirements in your paper. Finances is probably the biggest counterpoint you will need to address.

For your second idea, I would say you need to keep in mind that one of the main reasons skateboards and scooters are not allowed is liability and potential lawsuits. The other is that the school doesn't want students or the community using BYU campus as their skate park.

I think your third idea has a good point, when you focus on the required dining restrictions of freshman students, our religious beliefs about buying food on Sunday, and how many wards get out too late for students to eat dinner. You will want to find out just how many of the dorm wards get out late and include this number in your paper. Yes, some people are going to argue that the reason the hours are shorter is so that workers can enjoy their Sabbath and have time to worship and honor the day as well. You need to come up with a response to this counterargument. Just some things to think about.

  3. I really like your first idea. I think it's really hard we are a D-1 school, but don't have the sports teams like Notre Dame and Penn State. I think it's especially frustrating when you outplay your opponents, but work twice as hard financing. Just suggest some financing options, and I think you're good.

  4. i like your ideas but on the second one you have to keep in mind that if skateboards and scooters were allowed on campus where would they be kept during class. teachers don't want those all over the floors during classes.
