R.A Intro and first paragraph

Globalization is a hot topic in the global community, but especially in the United States. One of the biggest concerns about globalization is its effect on the U.S economy. Economic interdependence is a main result of increased globalization throughout the world. With the strained economic situations that have been occurring many people are concerned about the effects of globalization on the U.S economy. Robert T. Parry’s article “Globalization: Threat or opportunity for the U.S Economy?” presents a successful persuasive argument, mainly through its use of establishing ethos, relating to the common citizen, presenting the facts, and literary devices.

Establishing ethos or credibility is very important when writing an article with the intent to persuade or inform ones audience. The first sign of credibility that Perry’s argument shows is where the article appeared and its background. Adapted from an oral speech to investment professionals the article is part of a series of economic letters from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (FRBSF). One can assume that because Perry gave the speech he is an employee of the Federal Reserve. Being an employee for the Federal Reserve requires professional level skills and knowledge of economics. This gives automatic credibility to Perry because he works with the U.S economy; his job is to help keep the economy in good standing.

  1. I think you have a strong argument and that it address what we've been talking about in class. The one suggestion I would make would be to take out the "mainly" in your thesis. I feel as if this makes the thesis a little more informal and casual. Good luck!

  2. I really like it. I am doing the same article and I think you provided a good argument for ethos. You may want to put that Perry was the president/ chief executive officer of the federal reserve bank in San Francisco. Other than that I am excited to see what else you write.

  3. I am not convinced that the US is especially worried about Globalization. if it states this in the paper, you may want to address that in the paper. I think it is on the mind of many Americans but I am sure other countries are concerned or excited about it as well, equally so.maybe change it to....

just throwin' out some ideas... well done.

  4. Your first body paragraph is good, but you need to make another point or an example. I chose to do ethos as my first paragraph also. It would be best to point out some facts or example in the article where it establishes the authors credibility. Very good intro, clear thesis. I wouldn't change that.
