Tyler,Just make sure whether your do athletes or immigration that you take an international approach. You can't just do US athletes or US immigration problems. You must have at least two countries that you focus on. One way to do this could be to contrast the problems/success of other countries when dealing with these issues.
If you do the athletes it might be interesting to compare good vs. bad role models and what defines a "good" role model in today's society.
athletes in todays society seem to live two lifes, and sometimes they are exposed, like tiger. You could use Bode Miller as a comeback model. He had his episode last Olympics and has turned around to do well this year. Maybe incorporate musicians as well. I suggest you compare the role models in other countries and their trends. What kind of people in other countries are held in high regard and how is that countries lifestyle. Use the education level, drug use, crimes, premarital "stuff", and average income to compare. hope this gives you some ideas.
I dont know know if this helps in anyway, but an example from another country is Kazuhiro Kokubo, a snowboarder from Japan. Apparently he had a lot of japan upset about his appearance/dress in the olympics. also, another suggestion is that you could look at the influence of american athletes on foreign societies, as well as the athlete's influence here in the states. that would make it "international." just some ideas...
Ryne thanks for passing on some info about a specific athlete, I love it when students can share info in areas and help each other w/their topics.
I think you should stick with athlete role models. It seems to be the relavant issue of today. You could also focus on just pop stars in general and their influences globally as well as in their own countries.
I think that athletes being good role models would be a great topic. Many people look up to them and when they are doing bad things it can cause problems.
