This is a good topic, it's just wide, so try to narrow it down during your research this next week. You can narrow it to single women's rights, women and education, married women's rights, chastity laws based on gender, etc. Also, you will want to consider Africa as well. Female mutilation and other practices there are equally horrific, if not more so.
Like Rachelle said, Africa sounds like it would be a good place to discuss. In my RA article I read some about the women's rights and they are very poor.
This is a great topic. You should try and talk with Prof. Valerie Hudson from the Poly Sci department. I had her for a international relations class last semester and she's done a ton of research about how treatment of women impacts the country in so many ways, for good or for bad.
You may also want to talk with Cindy Kern from Political Science Department. I had her for PoliSci and Current Events 101 last semester. One lecture she gave specifically talked about the freedom/rights of women in the Middle East. I remember her saying that some countries in the Middle East make their highest value to be 'virtue', like how 'freedom' is to the US.
