Issues Paper Idea - Austin Huntsman

My idea is to discuss the ways that illegal immigration affects a nation, specifically Mexico and the U.S.

  1. Does Mexico have much of a problem with illegal immigration? I'm not aware of this, but maybe there is one. It's not enough to talk about the US problem and mention that the other country involved is Mexico. You will need to discuss Mexico and it's immigration problems equally. Another country you might consider looking at is Canada. They have a lot of immigrants there, not necessarily illegal, so it would be interesting to look at their policies and what is/isn't working for them.

  2. Maybe bring in some more countries besides Mexico and the U.S to make your argument more global.

  3. The only other place that comes to mind with immigration issues right now is North/South Korea but that is sort of a different situation and maybe not all that helpful for your paper. The U.S. has illegal immigrants from all over the world, not just Mexico so bringing in a couple more countries as examples will help.

  4. Actually the Koreas have very little immigration problems right now, since everyone in North Korea is more or less trapped. Germany has an issue with Turkish immigrants, and several countries have problems with African immigrants seeking asylum from war torn countries. Search for international immigration problems or region/country specific and immigration problems.

  5. I know that there is a big immigration problem with gypsies in Europe. More specifically in Italy, France, and Germany. It is a very interesting subject that you could find a lot of good information about.

  6. Ryan, thanks for passing on this info. It's great when students can collaborate and share their knowledge.

  7. Are you looking at people immigrating to Mexico also? or specifically emigrating from Mexico to the US? That is a hot topic right now, you should have no problem finding info.
