Op Ed Ideas - Garrett McClintock

Idea #1

Argument:BYU needs to remodel more bathrooms to be like those in the Wilk.

Assumption: Everyone loves the hand dryers in the Wilk.

Reason: When the bathrooms are remodeled, they need to be done to top of the line.

Claim: The hand dryers, and toilet paper dispensers are more sanitary and people find the hand dryers to be extremely amusing.

Idea #2

Argument: People need to sit fill in rows of lecture halls from the middle outward.

Assumption: Nobody likes climbing over 20 people to find a seat.

Reason: It is a distraction to those blocking the way as they get ready to focus for class, and disturbs the setting.

Claim: Climbing over people is frustrating, wastes time, and is an annoyance to all parties involved. If we started sitting in the middle, it would take away these problems.

Idea #3

Argument: BYU should argue for a Mountain West autobid, rather than a playoff.

Assumption: BYU should get a shot at the national championship every year.

Reason: If BYU were in an autobid conference, they would be able to go to bigger bowl games, leading to a national title game.

Claim: At the current state, with the recruiting differences (2010 notwithstanding) between BCS, and nonBCS schools, BYU has a better shot at winning via the BCS than a playoff. They could beat a better team by having 3 weeks of preparation much easier than having to beat really good teams for 3 or 4 weeks in a row with a playoff.

  1. To your seating idea...I like it. I think you have a solid, true assumption. No one likes like climbing over people to sit, or to leave.

  2. I find your second idea intriguing, but feel that you might struggle to find ways of suggested improvement. Some people prefer sitting on the isles, cause they have a class right after, or for other reasons. I feel that if you are going to argue this point, you will have to come up with some solid suggestions for improvement.

  3. I like your first agruement but I feel like you can have stronger reasons to support your opinion. For example, everything in the bathrooms is automatic therefore helping to keep things for sanitary. Especially with the swine flu going around campus, having these automatic appliances could be a benefit. Otherwise GREAT JOB!!!

  4. Garrett,

First of all, good job on your assumptions. Learning to recognize assumptions is very tricky. Second, I would echo what some of your classmates have said--consider if your reasons for changing are the most persuasive tactics you can use. With the hand dryers, consider the idea of germs spreading through contact on the door handles if you don't have a paper to grab the door with--all bathrooms would also need hand sanitizer right at the door area you could use after opening it. For stronger pros, you could talk about the earth-friendly pros of going paperless, and even the cleanliness factors of less trash on the bathroom floor.

For the lecture seating, you need to address student needs on timing, poor vision or hearing, and special needs. Try to anticipate what the objections to this argument would be, as well as the things people will agree with.

I'm a little confused with what you're arguing on your third piece--are you pro BCS or against? I can't quite tell. Either way, you have a good start, just work on refining and developing your arguments.
