Dustin Belliston...

#1: Military.
  • Argument- Navy Seals should not get court martialed for roughing up terrorists.
  • Reason- Navy Seals need to get information from these terrorist when interrogating.
  • Assumption- Terrorist are a threat to America.
  • Claim- 3 Elite Seals were court martialed for giving Ahmed Hashim Abedm, the alleged mastermind of a gruesome murder of 4 Americans, a "bloody lip."
#2: Onetimer Textbooks.
  • Argument- Teachers should not require disposable textbooks.
  • Reason- Adds extra dollars to the students cost.
  • Assumption- By using a disposable textbook it does not drive the cost down for the new book by eliminating the re-sale market.
  • Claim- a)My Econ 110 class requires that a disposable textbook be bought and the assgnment are torn out.b)creating a seperate book with the assignments in it could split the textbook between Text and Assignments and then allow for the re-sale of the text portion.
#3 BCS Bowl Games.
  • Argument- The NCAA Football Bowl Championship Series is an inadequate determination of the best college footbal team in the country.
  • Reason- It does not allow for all the teams in the country to compete for the championship, instead it is divided up in conferences and rankings.
  • Assumption- The BCS has not allowed all teams an equal chance to win.
  • Claim- a)The BCS employs a voting assesment, which may be influenced by the profit of certain teams playing each other. b) Allow undefeated teams to finish the season with out having the oppurtunity to compete against the "so-called" champion. c) The last 6 seasons have had more undefeated non-BCS champions than undefeated BCS champions.

  1. I like your argument about the one-time textbooks. It would not be hard to put the assignments in another book which would allow students to sell the books back and at least get a small amount of money.

  2. I think your book argument is something you could really write about. It wouldn't be bad if we had to get a little packet, or spiral bound book like we do for this class that has a rubric for some assignments, but when the books are $30 or $40, it's ridiculous.

  3. I agree with your book idea. Another suggestion that might work besides a separate worksheet book, would be for the teachers to post the worksheets and assignments on blackboard. Then each student would be responsible for obtaining the worksheets, but still be able to sell the main text book back.

  5. Dustin,

You've got a good start here. Now I'm just going to complicate the arguments a little. Your first argument lacks proper detail. If I read it right now, I get the impression that military people should be allowed to employ any tactic when garnering information to protect our country. That seems to also say you want to abolish the Geneva code, something that would have serious consequences for US soldiers and even civilians captured by enemy groups. You need to clarify just what you mean by "roughing up" and make sure that your details about a certain case are not conflicting depending on what side is describing the event. Also, the concept that turn about is fair play and other countries could label non-military personnel as "terrorist" and the subject those people to similar treatment.

On your second one, I would find out why classes do employ disposable textbooks. I don't think resale values are why teachers or departments choose this option. You'd have to find out the reasonings behind this choice before you can really argue for a change that will convince the people capable of taking action. This isn't to say you shouldn't try, just make sure you get enough background knowledge so you can make an effective argument.

And finally, the BSC bowl assumption would actually be that BSC should be an accurate reflection on the National Champion and in order for this to happen everyone has to participate.

Hope this helps with your argument planning.
