Poor Lighting on Campus/Campus Safety at Night

Every evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have Intro to Humanities of Asia 240 from 6:00- 7:15pm. This is not unlike many students here at Brigham Young University, where, while most classes run from the crack of dawn till mid-afternoon, many are also scheduled to start when the sun begins to set. Thus, when I step out after class and head towards safe little Robison Hall on the other end of campus, I do what many of us have probably done: look around the looming darkness, suppress those worries and what ifs, and scurry home as quickly and quietly as possible. In other words, while I’m not a girl who has Safewalk on speed dial, it is still eerily dark on campus after sunset. Admittedly there are some dim lampposts along the major walkways, but many areas are shrouded in shadow, especially where there are many turns and shrubbery. As well as reducing students’ worries, improving the poor and insufficient lighting on BYU campus will provide safer travelling conditions for the school community, as well as enhance the overall safety and security of campus.

  1. We talked about this in class, just make sure to get some stats, note any broken lights, and talk about Safewalk. What is the wait time on Safewalk? Also, maybe the shrubbery could be a good thing to bring out as well. Could reducing the shrubbery in areas give students better visibility and safety? What about the aesthetic argument and the idea that students should just not stay so late on campus?

  2. Kianalin I think the lighting concept it a great idea! In regards to Ms. Larsen's comment about students staying on campus so late, a counter could be that BYU's library is opened until 12:00 and later finals week..isn't this facilitating the problem your speaking of?

  3. I really like this topic. It is something that can be easily fixed if your paper is convincing enough!

  4. I work in a lab in the WIDB and sometimes I stay there until I finish what I am doing... and I leave the lab around 11pm everyday. It is dark and lonely and I would love if campus had more lights specially during winter time because the sun sets earlier. Maybe you could talk a little bit about people that work custodial night shifts. I love the comment about the Library, it is a strong point.

  5. I know that I mentioned this to you in class, but I still think it would help in your argument. Using that girl's letter to the Daily Universe will help give you more examples of the danger this safety problem creates, but also pathos as most people will feel sympathy towards that girl and her story. Also like we were talking about, it will help you refute the counter-argument that the Safewalk system is in place. Here is the link to that article/letter: http://universe.byu.edu/node/1233

  6. I really enjoyed your voice and description in that topic paragraph. Not only did you pick a great subject to write about, I can tell it means something to you. Your relation to the audience was great as well! Good job so far.
