Better enforcement

The Brigham Young University Athletic Department, along with the Honor Code Office should do a better job at enforcing the honor code with all their student athletes. There are certain areas that could be improved. For one, there should be a more strict punishment for those who have already broken the honor code, whether or not it is his or her first time. Secondly, find a more effective way of discipline/probation.

  1. Malosi, this ia great topic. Might I suggest that you talk to the honor code department about their philosophies regarding repeat offenders? Also, what are the types of discipline/probation you feel are ineffective? This could get a little sticky, because in some ways we want examples...but I don't know if that can really be given. Let's talk more.

  2. Would you be talking about the athletes/students who break the honor code using athletics or exercising as a reason? I know I have seen girls come out of the dorms dressed in a tight tank top and short short gym shorts and supposedly heading to the gym to work out. Im pretty sure that working out or not, its no excuse to be out of dress code. Im not sure what kind of offensives you are addressing, but this is one that I have noticed- in the dress code area of short gym wear.

  3. It is a good topic. If I were you I would also think about what kinds of information the Athletic department or coaches give to recruits about the honor code before they come to BYU. I know the football coach is very clear about it but I have a feeling some other departments might not be. They worry more about getting the recruit than anything.

  4. What aspect of the Honor Code are you talking about? It is a good topic but really broad. I was also wondering why you are specifically picking out the student athletes. I have noticed a breach in the dress code... i.e. short shorts!
