Opinion Editorial - Bike Racks

You always see the bike racks around campus, jammed with bikes. It appears that not a single additional bike could fit within those black snakes. Well, you are correct. There is absolutely no room for bikes after the first few hours of classes. Many students live off campus, and use a bike as their sole mode of transportation. But when they arrive at class, they find that all the racks are full or that the nearest bicycle rack is far from their destination. I agree that bikes should be locked up only in designated areas to keep the campus aesthetically pleasing, but in order to accommodate students riding bicycles to school, more bike racks should be placed in convenient areas around campus.

  1. Traivs, I believe there was a letter in the DU about this. See if you can find it and check out what the comments were. This will give you a good idea of what some opposing arguments could be. Also, I would suggest the idea of how additional bike racks gives more students the option to bike instead of drive. Do a little digging about who you could contact on this in the administration--since this essentially will be your audience.

  2. This topic is extremely relavent. It is true that every bike rack is full by like 10 am. Good choice

  3. I like the topic. I own a bike that I wouldn't want to be scratched by others and when the bike racks are that full that is hard to avoid. One claim could be that the bike racks that we currently have aren't efficient. ex. the snake like ones. The ones by the library seem to be more organized and you're able to fit more bikes there. Great topic.

  4. Good topic. one of my roomates had his bike licensed and registered and everything and i think he rarely uses it to get to campus because he can never find a spot to put it. you will probably be able to get alot of good input from different people's experiences on this
