Op. Ed.

BYU should not close all stores and restaurants during the Tuesday devotionals. I will talk about how inconveniencing it is to students with a full schedule who can not attend the devotionals. I will also discuss the workers of those stores and restaurants, talking about the ones who stay behind and don't attend the devotionals anyway, and the case made for the ones who desire to attend them. I will also discuss the possible motives behind these closures, and their ineffectiveness in accomplishing their goals.

  1. Jason, I would also suggest addressing the idea that being a good "LDS member" does not necessarily mandate going to devotionals. Your last line about motives in closing brings up the possibility of assumptions--which I would try to avoid. Talk to someone specifically about why they close these venues during devotional.

  3. You might also want to consider that perhaps they close the stores and venues- not to encourage or restrict people to attending devotionals- but instead to allow workers to attend if they so wish? And do they close the library as well? Cause if one of the opposing arguements is that people might wanna do something or print out an assignment and arent the kind of people to go to devotional then they can still access the library (if it indeed doesnt close during devotional)

  4. The Library services are closed during devotional like the LRC, the Commons area, etc. I agree with what you say. Something else you could talk about is that some people can't attend the university devotionals because they have classes before and after it.

  5. There could be alternatives to shutting everything down, and still getting the devo out to people. I would be interested to hear about that.

  6. Following Kap's comment, having the library open allows people to watch the devo live on computers and still get other things done if needed.
